Michael W. Hall, b. 1981

I am perpetually fascinated by people and places that are hidden in plain sight.  My art is inspired by my interests in things like astronomy, hobo culture, and shortwave radio.  These are like parallel worlds that surround us all the time without usually being truly noticed. To me, they beg further investigation.  My abstract work suggests openings into sublime and veiled regions, glimpses that make you want to step inside and explore.
I work predominantly in watercolor and gouache on paper, as well as large scale murals.
I designed the commemorative art for the 2018 Austin City Limits Music Festival. I was a 2017 Artist in Residence for Facebook. I completed a large scale mural commissioned by the City of Smithville, TX, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and have also done commissions for Nordstrom's, Austin Daily Press, East Side Glass, and several other companies, and was a finalist for Austin Art Boards in 2015. I have work in the permanent collection of the Massillon Museum as well as many private collections.

I have exhibited in New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, Austin, Dallas, and San Jose, and other cities throughout the US.  I was one half of the experimental psychedelic music duo and printing project, Ospreys, touring extensively from 2005-2009.  I have written about my experiences riding freight trains over the last 15 years for Faded Glory magazine, and for the French book about North American boxcar art, Outside the Box. In 1999, I co-founded the Lost Film Fest, a nomadic film festival which continues to travel the world to this day.  I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD and lived in Philadelphia, PA for thirteen years before relocating to Texas in 2012.
